报告摘要(Abstract)

In this presentation, I'll present an in-depth look at Compute Express Link (CXL), discussing its significance and current status. CXL is a fast and efficient communication standard that facilitates interaction between central processing units (CPUs) and specialized computing units like field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and graphics processing units (GPUs). This not only speeds up data access but also optimizes how complex tasks are processed. I'll outline the evolution of CXL, starting from its first version, CXL 1.0, to the most recent update, CXL 3.0. Each iteration brings its own set of features, and I'll elucidate how they distinguish themselves from each other, as well as why CXL may be a better choice than other existing options.

Moving beyond just the technical details, the talk will also explore the practical applications of CXL technology. I will cover its role in the operation of large data centers and how it contributes to advancements in sectors such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. This comprehensive overview aims to be beneficial not only for hardware engineers and software developers but also for anyone keen on understanding the upcoming shifts in the computing landscape. Overall, the presentation will equip you with a thorough understanding of both the underlying principles and real-world applications of CXL technology.

主讲人简介(Bio)

Dr. Myoungsoo Jung holds the position of Tenured Associate Professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), where he leads the CAMEL Lab. He is also the founder and CEO of Panmnesia, a start-up supported by KAIST. Regarding his educational credentials, Dr. Jung earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Pennsylvania State University, a Master's degree in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and another Master's degree from Korea University in Seoul.

Beyond his academic roles, Dr. Jung has substantial experience in the industrial sector. He holds an extensive portfolio of U.S. patents, mainly in the area of multi-channel Solid State Drives (SSDs). He has authored over a hundred research articles, mainly concentrating on SSD firmware and file systems at the kernel level. Many of his papers have been published in highly-regarded journals such as OSDI, ISCA, MICRO, ASPLOS, FAST, and HPCA. His research excellence has garnered him funding from respected organizations like the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and the National Research Foundation. Furthermore, he has received notable awards including the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Award of Excellence and the NVMW Memorable Paper Award and Samsung Best Paper Award, both in 2022.

Dr. Jung also plays an active role in several key industry consortia. He is a contributing member of the Compute Express Link (CXL) consortium and sits on the boards of PCI-SIG, RISC-V, and OCP. His current research interests span multiple fields, such as quick and efficient data exchange protocols like CXL, specialized computing architectures, FPGA-enabled acceleration, evolving computer architecture, and the effects of new types of memory and SSD technologies on operating systems.
